I’ve been a student of the circus since June 2016. I started with pole, got into lyra, became a fan of the silks, and am now infatuated with chains. My truest love, however, is the aerial pole, which I met in March.
I danced when I was very tiny, but quit when I was six, already feeling like I was too tall next to my fellow ballerinas. I became a runner rather than pursue dance, and I never imagined there could be a place for me- or that I could work hard enough to make a place for myself- entering the very gymnastic aerial world in my late 20s at 6’2″.
Watching another tall woman like Jennifer Wilkins inspired me to embrace the challenge, trust the process, and face my fears. My forever inspiration is my mother, a 6′ tall dancer who also found a way to dance despite obstacles and has always been my biggest fan. And I dance for all the misfits and the outsiders- what makes you feel different or like a freak can become your greatest asset.
Performing has opened up a vivid world of characters that I can tap into and express with movement. It has allowed me to recognize the power even the smallest movements can have on myself and those around me. I’ve stopped shrinking from taking up space, I’m more confident tackling challenges, and I’m more powerful in both body and mind.
I’d like my loved ones and the patrons of the circus to know that the aerial arts are even more rewarding and difficult than performers make them look. I’m so proud to be a member of this circus family. I finally found my freak show. :’)
